Beer God’s Notes

Original Tasting Notes: Lemongrass Saison collaboration with @lostabbey – well this is refreshing. I mean that in numerous ways.

Lemongrass: Lemongrass is widely used as a culinary herb in Asian cuisines and also as medicinal herb in India. It has a subtle citrus flavor and can be dried and powdered, or used fresh. It is commonly used in teas, soups, and curries. It is also suitable for use with poultry, fish, beef, and seafood.

This was a refreshing beer.  The flavors that were in play were new and refreshing to me and the actual beer itself was refreshing.  I can’t imagine how much better this beer would have tasted to me if I’d had it after a day of working outside in the summer (yes we get summer in Buffalo).

The lemongrass had a really nice effect on the normal saison flavors and mellowness (is that a word?).

Maui has been knocking it out of the park lately and this beer is no different.  It’s super tasty, light, and refreshing while still having a nice body and feeling right.

This was a collaboration with The Lost Abbey, and this was my first beer from them, but I definitely hope it is not my last.

Description

A Limited Release Collaboration Brew for the New Year

Kihei, Hawaii (January 3, 2017) – Maui Brewing Company is pleased to announce the first limited release brew of 2017, Lemongrass Saison. Originally produced as a collaboration in 2013 with The Lost Abbey of San Marcos, CA, the Belgian inspired Saison is brewed with locally raised lemongrass.

“A simple Saison brewed with local Lemongrass is something I had wanted to do but never attempted. Our original batch of this beer was the culmination of that vision; and Maui Brewing’s skillful use of this amazing flavor makes me truly wish it was available more often. In revisiting this recipe, my wishes are coming true,” said Tomme Arthur, COO and Co-Founder of The Lost Abbey.

Lemongrass Saison utilizes White Wheat, Oats, Pilsner malt, Cascade and El Dorado hops. A total of 200lbs of lemongrass was used for the whole project at a ratio of 40 lbs. per 100bbl batch.

The opportunity to taste the light esters and subtle spice of Lemongrass Saison begins this Friday, January 6th, at both Maui Brewing Company locations in Kihei and Lahaina. MBC will offer a special “Keep the Glass” commemorative can glass. Fans will be able to add to their Flagship Can Set collection which became available during the holidays. Lemongrass Saison, at 5.2% ABV and 15 IBUs, will be available in 6-pack cans and draft in all markets where Maui Brewing Company craft beer can be found.
